USB connectivity to app

I saw a posting from 2014 asking for porting to USB. Looks like AppInventor has not added that facility so far. Here is the problem. If an app is developed to get data from a sensor using ESP8266, the user will have to first connect the ESP module to the local router with credentials. It will be extremely easy for the user to input the credentials in the app and the app sending the credentials to the ESP module via the USB cable during initial setup. After that we can use wifi to send and receive data. We can use modules with both bluetooth and wifi for attaching the sensor and use bluetooth on the smartphone to communicate the setup information. But that will increase the cost of the sensor module. Is there anyway to overcome this difficulty?

you could write your own extension and create a block yourself...

more information about how to create an extension see the App Inventor Extensions document
however that will be more advanced and will require some Java skills...
