Activity starter email routine gets cut off when certain characters are used

Activity starter email routine gets cut off when certain characters are used such as # and &.

passing text from textboxes to variables and then passing those to an email body with activity starter but if the user enters # in the textbox then the email will cut off at the point of that character.

any clues?
