Chat Function

I was wondering if there was a way that I could make a chat function that would connect two users and they would be able to chat with each other (chat would be over wifi). I know that there is the PubNub chat tutorial, but I was wondering if there is another tutorial that I could use instead of that one because I'd rather not sign up with PubNub. Thanks in advance.
