Hello, I am new with this app inventor and want to know if it is possible to use this to make an app that uses the phone's microphone to constantly listen out for and detect a specific sound and react to it. I also want this to be able to work in the background. Can this be done in app inventor?

No, there's no direct capability for that in AI... You can record sounds with the sound recorder, but you'd have to know when to save them, and what to do with them once they're saved.
