To AI Team: How do you stop uninstallation of emulator deleting other files?

I am a teacher in a school using App Inventor 2 for a coding project. Students have installed the emulator on home computers to test the apps.

One student had a problem with the emulator so attempted to uninstall and then reinstall it. He then found all his images and documents were deleted.

I understand that users who do not install to the default location run this risk.

I am having to contact parents to advise them about safe uninstallation.

Question for the App Inventor team: What steps should people go through (aside from back up all your files and have all installation disks handy) to guard against this problem?

Whilst I think this is a fantastic package, I am deeply concerned by the problems that this user and his family have experienced, using the software which I recommended to them.

There are  instructions for the un-install of the adb , it appears you or your students did not find or follow them and got creative about un-installing.   The solution is both better instructions  and  better education about working with a Mac or PC and the potential dangers of the novice (someone who has no clue about what he/she may be doing).

I am sorry some of your student's and you got burned.  Why?    Haven't a clue what those who messed up their home computers did. " He then found all his images and documents were deleted"  is a little nebulous..he probably deleted the entire folder?

Please do write the MIT professor responsible for documentation directly.  Contact Josh at jsheldon@mit.edu   He is a busy person and is not very responsive to requests from this forum's moderators but a message from you might get improved documentation.  The solution to problems you experienced is better education.   Unfortunately, the characteristics in AI2 users that make this AI2 an exceptional learning tool ... curiousness, determination to succeed etc. are also those that can unintentionally cause issues while explore issues on their PCs

What do you think MIT's AI2 could do to ameliorate this type of mess-up in the future?   The AI2 is very responsive to Teacher/Instructor concerns.  Be aware, you can delete everything on your hard drive with a format command.

On the Mac

Perform these steps in order:
  1. Logout, or reboot your computer. (Important!)
  2. Download the new Mac installer package
  3. Install the new software you just downloaded. Do not change the installation directory from the default that the installer picks.

On Windows

On Windows, you must install the setup software from an account that has administrator privileges in order for App Inventor to work. Installing via a non-administrator account is currently not supported.
To update the setup tools, perform these steps in order:
  1. Go to the Program Files directory and find the unistall program in the AppInventor Setup directory (installed with the previous setup software), and rununinstall.
  2. Reboot your computer. (Important!)
  3. Download the new Windows installer package.
  4. Install the new software you just downloaded. Do not change the installation directory from the default that the installer picks.
  5. Logout or Reboot your computer. (You should now see the aiStarter program running).

If aiStarter is still not running then you need to install the setup tools by following the instructions at the link below and try the test page again.
Don’t neglect the part of the instructions dealing with logging out (or rebooting) and running the uninstaller.   Again, you must reboot your PC before runing the uninstaller from the Program Files directory, and then attempting to install/re-install aiStarter.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I will pass this on to our students.
